Almond Butter & Dates

I believe that I have a sugar addiction. While my metabolism is fast enough that it doesn’t effect my weight I’ve been doing a study of my person over the past month and the effect sugar has on it. I was disheartened to see how negatively sugar effects me. I’ve also noticed how I will from time to time binge on sweets, consuming what for a regular joe would be considered an exhorbitant amount of sugar. It can feel uncontrollable to pass by some product with sugar in it. I ought to clarify when I talk about all of this sugar I’m consuming I’m referring to the processed sugar that is in so many confections and food in general.

Luckily a friend of mine turned me on to a great substitute to calm those sugar urges: almond butter & dates (pitted of course). I’m not so sure about the fat content (I’ve heard almond butter isn’t exactly the greatest) but I have found that I have more energy and focus when I substitute these for candy than I would if I consumed a similar amount of sweets. The issue of their being sugar in the dates might be an issue to some, but as far as I understand, since it is a natural, unprocessed, sugar your body is not effected nearly as negatively as by processed sugar.

For those of you familiar with what dates look like you might not think it is worth it. My wife likes to refer to the dates as cockroaches because of their color and size which is so similar to some of the roaches we saw when living in NYC. If you can get past that though you’ll be glad you did. The taste is pleasant and definitely sweet. The almond butter helps add weight to the overall consuming of the treat. Maybe I’m on my way to recovery from sugar addiction!
