rainy street (NYC)

Last summer I was helping some of my brothers-in-law to record some songs they had written. At the time I didn’t have a real sophisticated setup, so generally only the person doing the playing could listen to the other tracks while recording. We were all squished into the space above the garage, turning on the air conditioning when we were listening to playbacks, then sweating it out while recording. It was a fun time. One of the tunes had a drum beat that caught my ear. The tune itself was a pleasant tune about a guy needing a girl in his life. When I was listening during recording and could only hear the drum beat I heard a very different sound coming out. It was dark, gritty and reminded me of walking down rainy streets in NYC in the middle of the night coming home from gigs.

After finishing recording that night, which was close to midnight, I kept hearing this other song so I decided to record it. As it was so late at night it would have been difficult to find a singer to do the track, so I decided to do it myself. The other issue was the riff I was hearing in my head was in seven while the drum beat was in four. Turns out it wasn’t an issue, it helped add to the feeling of the tune overall. The lyrics were made up on the spot, and a song was born and (roughly) recorded all within two hours’ time.

As I was laying in bed at 4:30 this morning unable to sleep (Jens wasn’t up for sleeping and was flopping around in our bed) this song came into my head. I had forgotten that it even existed and that I hadn’t done anything with it. I created an mp3 of it and thought I’d post it for whoever was interested. My singing debut. At least it’s an interesting study. rainy street (NYC)
